Concept Explanation

Multiplying 3 Digit Number By 1 Digit Number By Regrouping

Multiplication of numbers can be done with the help of tables

For example let us multiply 224 X 4 = ?

The multiplication can be done as follows

Step 1:

Multiply the digit at ones place

4 ones X 4 = 16 ones

As 16 is greater than 9 or we can say that 16 is a two digit number

We will write 6 ones in the ones column and carry 1 tens to the tens column.

Step 2:

Multiply the digit at tens place

2 tens X 4 = 8 tens

Now we add the carried over tens from the step 1

8 tens + 1 tens (carried over) = 9 tens

We will write 9 in the tens column

Step 3:

Multiply the digit at hundreds place

2 hundreds X 4 = 8 hundreds

Write 8 in the hundreds column.
